Emerging Leaders Fund alumni grantee organization GirlTrek recently celebrated a major milestone: one million women have taken the GirlTrek pledge: “I will walk in my neighborhood each Saturday and encourage others to do the same! I will use #GirlTrek to tell my story and wear "superhero blue" so that everyone sees my service. We will be one million strong by 2020 and re-establish walking as a tradition in our communities.”

GirlTrek became an Emerging Leaders Fund grantee in 2014 with approximately 20,000 walkers and a goal of reaching 1 million by the end of 2020. The organization was founded by Vanessa Garrison and Morgan Dixon to address the startling public health statistics related to Black women, as well as to honor the legacy of Harriet Tubman and other Black women heroes of racial justice.
