The Philadelphia Inquirer featured the story of Joe Ligon, age 83, who was released from prison last week after serving 68 years. Ligon was sentenced to life without parole at age 15. Volunteers from Emerging Leaders Fund grantee organization Youth Sentencing and Re-entry Project (YSRP) provided legal assistance to Ligon, as well as help securing a place to live and other services upon his release. Automatic life sentences without parole for juveniles were declared unconstitutional by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 2012. Click here to read the article.
